Greetings,

A question of curiosity occurred to me and I could not find the answer anywhere else. I was wondering if new digital devices such as DVD players can output to a television channel like our VCRs did with analog tuners, or must they have a dedicated video input on the television?   Basically, could an external device be accessed on channel 3/4 on a digital TV?

In principle, devices could output onto digital ch3/4.  The problem is, a modulator to enable this is an expensive option for the device.  Although many legacy devices have provided outputs for analog ch3/4, and all TVs sold for the past few years have had dual analog/digital tuners, there's no guarantee that manfacturers will continue to provide an analog tuner on new TVs.  That makes it unlikely that new devices will have an analog ch 3/4 output.  In any event, a direct video output, whether it's analog (RCA) or digital (HDMI, and now USB 3.0), is the better way to go, from a signal perspective.  --AGC
